When I joined the Creative Learning Centre (CLC), I was not in school because of lack of school fees and scholastic materials. I also believed that I was one of the weakest pupils in class which made me stay in the CLC for even longer because I couldn’t read or write. I broke down every time my fellow classmates left me to join the mainstream. I almost lost hope of leaving the CLC one day. The CLC greatly helped me to improve on my performances.

I’m so grateful that in the end I have finally been integrated back to mainstream education and this has given me hope for a brighter future ahead of me.

Stories

I dropped out of school because of peer influence. I had friends who used to drink alcohol and influenced me to begin doing the same. It caused me to start engaging in unhealthy behaviours. I‘m happy and grateful to the Child ambassadors Club for their collective efforts to come and speak to me about the dangers of what I was doing and the importance of education. I realised my mistakes, left that behaviour and decided to go back to school. I am now studying happily and staying with my fellow Child Ambassadors.

My parents could not sustain me in school because of lack of school fees. I came to join the Creative Learning Centre at Oasis through one of the other beneficiaries. I am happy that I have learnt new things that I never knew before like expanding numbers, constructing sentences and craft work. I have also made good friends from the class. I have hopes that one day I will be able to join the main stream when I get school fees. This will enable me to realize my dream of becoming a Chef in one of the big hotels in future.

Oasis has empowered me with tailoring skills from the Vocational training classes. Because of the skills I acquired, I’m now running my own tailoring business. The business is enabling me to take care of my 2-year-old baby by providing food, milk and renting a small room as a shop. My story could have been different had it not been for the tailoring skills that I acquired. I feel I’m empowered to support my life and the community using my skills.

Before I came to Beersheba I didn’t even know how to kick a ball, but now I know. I love the training because I exercise and have fun with my friends. During the holiday programme, we had football drills that helped us learn about anger management. I used to get angry at times but I have now learnt about self-control.

Coach Karim is really good to us and helps us a lot and did a lot of things for us and did a lot of work so we could have the holiday programme. I enjoy being part of the Young Farmers Club and coach Karim helps us a lot to grow crops. I am happy because we have made some money and I can buy books for school. When I am older, I want to become a pilot and fly our entire team to play in England

Many girls are not in school because of lack of school fees. Mary 24 years old stopped in primary 4 due to lack of school fees. After dropping out of school, Mary joined vocational skills training and learnt tailoring. She’s now part of an OVC savings group from which she hopes will enable her get start-up capital for her dream tailoring shop. Mary believes with the skills she acquired, she will be able to train other girls for sustenance.
